The stein has a series of three scenes, one of peasant dancers, one with musicians, and one with couples dancing and musicians. The three scenes are each on smaller steins designed and signed by Mettlach artist Christian Warth. Although this master stein is not signed, it is obvious it is based on his three steins.
The lid features a pottery three dimensional finial. The bottom of the stein features the Mettlach abbey mark and the date code of "97" for 1897.
The stein measures approximately 20 1/2 tall to the top of the pewter thumb lift. The stein has had a professional repair to the inlay lid that was cracked, and there was a small chip to the upper relief band of the body, also professionally repaired, now looking fantastic.
For anyone collecting German beer steins or interested in German steins, I would highly recommend joining SCI, as you will receive publications and can communicate with members from all over the world about steins. There are also past publications online, where you can research steins through a number of scholarly articles. Please contact with any questions.
